AD 43, Castra Lafe 2007 Concept and Plan

First:

Download and read the Lafe Handbook HERE. It's a .pdf file, you can get the free adobe reader (if you're from some strange planet and don't already have it on your computer) at www.adobe.com/products/reader/. Anyway, read it, know it, live it.

Concept:

Join either the victorious Roman Army or the soon to be conquered Pictish/Celtic Barbarians at BRITAIN A.D. 43 On March 27-30 for a weekend of Ancient Reenacting. The site opens at 12 NOON on March 27th and is located in LAFE, ARKANSAS on 94 acres of private land. There are several ponds, woods, fields, and many places for Celts and courageous Romans to interact in meaningful and constructive ways. We look forward to seeing you around the campfire.

This event will be the seventh hosted on this site. The fees have gone up this year in order to ease the cash burden on the host legion. We request each adult participant to provide $25 for the evening meals, straw bedding, and firewood provided. The pre-registration rate is $20.00 and must be postmarked by March 7th, 2007 for the pre-registration rate.

The following are a few rules for the safety of participants.

  1. NO drugs are allowed, period.
  2. Alcohol will be permitted, but there will be no alcohol given to or consumed by minors (under age 21) at any time.
  3. Campfires will be built only in authorized fire pits.
  4. Campfires will have a “fire watch” at all times. NO UNATTENDED FIRES WILL BE ALLOWED.
  5. The Roman Group will have a leader, as well as the Barbarian Group. These persons will be responsible for fire prevention and your safety. In an emergency, please listen to them and be vigilant about the fire risk.
  6. Upon arrival, please sign in and let the staff know if there are any medical conditions or allergies which we need to know about (beestings, food allergies, diabetes, etc.)
  7. Small children left unattended will be sold as galley slaves; small children who are supervised will be welcome to stay.
  8. The owner of the land and the staff will not be held responsible for accidents, injury, or lost items. Please be careful and obey the rules.
  9. This is private property and the landowner will be fighting for Rome and tossing pila as well, but we should remind all people attending that:
  10. All fees will be paid, and waivers and registration forms will be signed at the front gate before proceeding into the site.
  11. All attendees will get dressed out before leaving the gate or crossing the bridge. A dressing tent will be provided at the gate.  (Note that all armor should be polished and in good repair.)
  12. This is an Ancient Reenactment event, participants should strive for authenticity. You can pitch your modern tent near the parking area, talk your way into someone’s period tent, or just pull up a warm sheepskin next to one of the camp fires.
  13. Members of the Castra Lafe staff are all volunteers and reserve the right to deny entry or have persons removed from the property that are in violation of site rules or state or federal laws.
  14. Any infraction of the above rules could mean expulsion from the site.
  15. Note the following.
    • Temperature will typically be in the 40s-50s during daylight. At night, it will be colder, hence the wool and warm skins. I personally would suggest 3 or 4 wool blankets. Woolen braccae, undones’ and wool cloaks are VITAL clothing at night.
    • Wood for fires will be provided (available at fort).
    • Portajons or outhouses will be available.
    • A shower house (up front by parking) is provided for the convenience of those far away travelers. (Coffee pot hidden within.)
    • Straw will be provided for bedding (if needed).
    • Water will be available (bring your own containers, please).
    • Pictish or Celtic re-enactors should contact the local clan leader for the location of their campsite.
    • Individual Cohorts and Legionnaires may make camp as terrain allows; however, a turf wall and ditch fort has been constructed south west of the local tribes. Fellow legions are invited to camp with ISPA legions in the fort.
